Incense Workshops I've been doing incense workshops since
1998 and I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds and hundreds of
people how to make incense. I've done workshops all around the
country with people as young as 5 and as old as, well who really counts
past 70? Every workshop teaches me new things. Whether
introducing someone to rolling incense for the first time or allowing
someone to experience a rare aromatic, teaching others has also taught
me. My deepest thanks to all of the people who have attended my
workshops over the years. Below are descriptions of the standard
workshops that I offer. I can also create a custom workshop just for
your group. We can focus on whatever aspect of incense stirs your
passion or focus on ingredients that are particularly important to you.
Most everyone starts with Incense Making 101 and it's a lot
of fun. All workshops are designed to last 1 1/2 to 2 hours, although the time can also be adjusted to fit your needs. Shortened versions of workshops can be done for events with tight timetables. I ask for a minimum of 5 people per workshop unless other arrangements are made at the time of booking. Private lessons and incense experiences are also available. You don't need a store to host a workshop. Many workshops are held in someone's home for a group of their close friends or circle-mates. Organizations, festivals, or just a fun party for friends, can all host an incense making workshop or party. Click for My Workshop Calendar Incense Making
Workshops Incense Making
101 This class teaches the basics of
incense making from a hobbyist’s point of view.
If you’re simply curious about incense making and plan to burn
sticks or cones around the house to improve the scent, then this is the
class for you. The cost is to
cover the various incense making ingredients.
Participants will get to make at least two different incense
blends. Magick
Incense Making 101 Much like above, this workshop teaches
the basics for home incense makers. However,
detailed information is offered on making incense for use in ritual and on
altars. In addition to making
sticks and cones, this workshop also introduces people to “moist” or
“kneaded” incense that is burned on charcoal.
Topics also include incorporating incense into rituals and
empowering incense as well as ethical concerns.
Participants will get to make at least two different incense
blends, including one “moist”. Advanced Incense Making Also available in both a magickal and
non-magickal/hobby variations, this class moves on from the basics
taught in the 101 workshop to more advanced concepts in incense including
burning temperatures, fixatives, advanced drying techniques and more.
Participants will get to make at least two incense blends. Other Incense Making Workshops I teach a variety of specialized
incense workshops and can easily design one to fit any need or occasion.
Below is a list of some of the workshops I can offer.
Most
are variations on the Incense Making 101 workshops, so they incorporate
all of the material for that workshop but with a specific theme. Yule Incense Making
This workshop combines the basic instructions found in Incense Making 101 with Yule-themed incense recipes. In the rare cases where time permits, we make 3 different incense blends in this workshop. This workshop is typically held 2-6 weeks before Samhain to allow time for the incense to dry or cure. It is a great opportunity to make the ultimate person Yule gift for your loved ones. Samhain Incense Making This workshop combines the basic instructions found in Incense Making 101 with Samhain-themed incense recipes designed to honor and commune with those who have corssed the veil. This workshop is typically held 2-6 weeks before Samhain to allow time for the incense to dry or cure. Handfasting Incense Making Is someone in your circle planning a handfasting? Magickal incense made specially for this purpose is simply an awesome addition. Whether making incense as a gift for the couple or making it for use during the festivities, this workshop is typically held 2-6 weeks before the Handfasting to allow time for the incense to dry or cure. However, there is a variation on this one where the group makes moist incense that can be used as soon as the following day. This is a great way to say thank you to everyone who helped with your handfasting. Relax and make some wonderful, loved-filled incense the day before the handfasting to reward everyone's hard work. Spring Incense Making Spring is a special time that can be celebrated all year with special Spring incense. This workshop makes a great activity to celebrate the start of Spring and the rebirth that it brings. It's also a great activity in the dark days of Winter to bring in the energy of the Spring soon to some. This workshop combines the basic instructions found in Incense Making 101 with Spring-themed incense recipes. Asian Incense Making This workshop teaches the basic information found in Incense Making 101 with traditional Asian ingredients and techniques. This workshop includes one batch of cones or stick made using a wood binder plus a special moist incense blend. Incense of the Pacific NW This workshop presents the basic instructions found in Incense Making 101 with a focus on plants and woods of the Pacific NorthWest. Participants will make sticks and/or cones as well as special moist incense made completely from materials native to the region. Making Incense with Wood Binders This workshop introduces participants to the ancient technique of using natural wood binders for incense making. Several different traditional wood binders will be sampled and some non-traditional binders might make their way into the workshop too. Two different batches of incense will be made using wood binders. Dragon's Blood Incense Dragon's Blood is one of the most beloved fragrant resins. Its deep and dark scent holds many secrets and has enchanted people for millenia. This variation on Incense Making 101 incorporates Dragon's Blood in both recipes. Due to the high cost of quality Dragon's Blood, this workshop may require a slightly higher fee. I can assure you that it's worth it. Incense Made With Herbal Teas This class uses the basics
taught in the 101 workshop with the added element of herbal teas and
infusions. This fun workshop often leads to drinking as much of the
tea as is used in the incense. This is a light-hearted workshop that
introduces participants to a rarely considered aspect of incense making
that is as easy as opening your kitchen cabinet.
Incense Use Workshops Basic Incense
Use This workshop is an introduction to the
wide variety of types and styles of incense found in the world, as well as
a bit of history. Topics
discussed include selecting censer/incense burners, styles of incense
(including, sticks, cones, coils and more), incense “seals”,
discerning high-quality incense and alternative methods of burning (such
as charcoal). Each participant
will receive a packet containing samples of some of the incense discussed.
Basic
Magick Incense Use Available in both a magickal and
non-magickal/hobby variations, this workshop offers an introduction
to using incense in magick as well as for mundane uses.
In addition to the topics discussed in the workshop above, specific
rituals will be discussed as well as special magickal considerations,
“listening” to incense and special techniques for preparing incense
burners for use on your altar. Each
participant will receive a packet containing samples of some of the
incense discussed. Advanced Incense Use This workshop takes attendees beyond
the basics to work with trail burning, hidden trails, incense clocks, and
more. Advanced techniques for
incorporating incense into magick and rituals is discussed in depth.
This workshop can only be conducted in a space where incense can be
burned. Each participant will
receive samples of some of the materials discussed and used in the
workshop. Listening To Incense This workshop introduces Asian incense
techniques onto Western techniques. This
workshop is available in several different versions including Listening
to Herbs, Incense Games, and An
Introduction to Kodo. |
